The largest gambling charity organisation in the UK has unveiled a full list of the pledges and donations it has received in the period from the first to the third quarter of its ongoing 2022/2023 financial year.
GambleAware has previously revealed that it publicly announces the information regarding the aforementioned donations to guarantee transparency over its current voluntary funding arrangements with licensed and regulated gambling companies in the UK that make donations to the organisation on a quarterly basis.
The gambling charity revealed that between the first and third financial quarters – from April 1st, 2022 to December 31st, 2022 – the organisation received voluntary and additional donations worth a total of £13.2 million. GambleAware also explained that it has not received any money through regulatory settlements over the financial year to date.
As the published list of the British gambling operator’s donations and pledges states, two of the largest gambling companies in the UK accounted for 90% of the total funds received by GambleAware from the industry. The charity stated that the largest contributor was Entain, which donated a total of £7 million, followed by bet365, which remained second, with an overall contribution of £4.9 million.
The two companies accounted for a total of £11.9 million of the £13.2 million that GambleAware received in the first, second, and third fiscal quarters combined. Income from the rest of the licensed and regulated gambling companies in the UK accounted for only 10% of the total amount, with a number of small operators sticking to the minimum amount of £250 required as a donation.
Gambling Companies’ Contributions to Fund Education, Prevention, Research and Treatment of Problem Gambling
The biggest charity organisation focused on the British gambling sector also revealed that donations from the four largest gambling companies in the country have been rising in value since 2020.
This positive trend is believed to have occurred as a result of a commitment arranged by the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) for large operators in the UK that are supposed to contribute 1% of their overall gross gaming yield before the 2023/2024 financial year. The donations are aimed at being used for funding education, prevention, research, and treatment of problem gambling and gambling-related harm.
Licensed gambling operators in the UK have until March 31st, 2023 to make their donations to the largest gambling charity in the country in order to be included in GambleAware’s current financial year. Under the existing gambling laws, gambling companies are asked to contribute a minimum of 0.1% of their annual gross gaming yield to the charity every year. Operators that have generated less than £250,000 in gross gaming yield are required to donate at least £250 to the organisation.
GambleAware shared that the funds received during the financial year are set to be used to support the National Gambling Treatment Service.
